Manhattan Beach Grand Prix Race - 2006
L to R: Jeff Brown, Mike Fleming (who came in 5th) and Bruce Steele (who finished 14th) in the Masters 55+ race at the Manhattan Beach Grand Prix, August 13, 2006. Mike won the race in 1999.

Bruce Steele writes, “I ran into Jeff Brown in the South Bay last year for the first time since the middle 70's and bike ride with him a lot.  We rode together down to San Diego in July.  I last saw Mike Fleming in Aspen in the summer of '70, right after I graduated from the University of Colorado. I was sitting with friends in an outdoor restaurant when he entered. He had shoulder-length hair, a beard and was carrying a double-bladed axe! I didn't recognize him until he walked up behind me and said ‘Bruce, is that you?’ Thirty-six years later, when I lined up next to him at a local race, I said “Mike, is that you?”  We have done a number of races together this year and I’m looking forward to our racing together next year.  I started riding bikes with Mike and his older brother, Tim, in Glendale when we were 13.  One time, once, we rode over Angeles Crest back to Glendale from Edwards AFB.  Mike kept on riding and racing (along with racing cars and motorcycles) while I did other things.  Now we are back to doing what we did as kids - pretty neat."

Chuck Manuel, Jeff Luther, Bob Ferguson, Jim Young - Summer, 1961
Jeff's comments: Taken soon after I'd moved to Glendale. Jim's dad shot this in his back yard and since one wanted the polaroid photo, I kept it. I was starting GHS that fall; the others still had another year at Wilson Jr. High. Bob had come from Canada and I believed returned there within a year. I don't remember him at GHS. Nor do I remember Jim beyond that summer. Chuck lived down Kenwood St. from me, one of the first people I'd met. What an innocent age at 14-15 years old!

Jim Patterson, Jeff Luther - 1967
Jeff's comments: Photo taken at my grandparents' home in Burlingame. Jim was in the Air Force, stationed at Travis AFB, taking a little R&R. I'd moved back to the Bay Area to work at Lockheed. We were dressed up for something!, but I don't remember what. I really liked my Ernst tie.

Jan (Kelley) Bailey and family visit Jeff Luther - Summer, 1982
Jeff's comments: Photo taken when Jan and her family stopped by in Palo Alto during their vacation to northern California.
L to R: son David Bailey, me, son Matt Bailey, Jan (Kelley) Bailey, her husband Dave Bailey.
A good friend for many years (she had lived in the same apartment bldg. on Kenwood St. as I did during our GHS days) and a great lady, sadly, Jan passed away in 1995. You can read her In Memoriam tribute here.
